Put Backs

The player begins about 4 feet straight out from the basket, ball in hand. At the word ‘go’, he has 60 seconds to bank in as many shots underneath as possible. Player retrieves the ball after every shot, hopefully as it falls through the net and before it hits the floor. Player can count his own or have a partner do it. Player cannot travel, but can reposition with one dribble if necessary after regaining the ball. Yell ‘stop’ after 60 seconds.

Instructions

Chart the players’ progress each time. If the player has a partner, do the drill twice each before stopping.

Tips

  • The shot that hurts the most to see missed is a put back, and yet a lot of them are missed. This drill was used on a 7th-grade boys’ team with no height, and the top performer for the season was 36 shots made in 60 seconds. Taller high school players should be able to get into the upper 40s. Make sure the player does not travel, but takes a dribble if he needs to reposition himself on either side of the basket.
