Ready Shoot

This drill teaches a player to set the ball quickly to their ‘READY’ shooting position (the last point the ball is set prior to initiating the shooting motion), and to maintain a constant rhythm and motion even if the shooting rhythm is disturbed by a defender, or momentary pause to spot an open player.

Instructions

The shooting player, moves to an open spot on the floor within their normal shooting range. After each shot they move to a new position. The passer-‘caller’ rebounds the ball, and passes to the shooter after each shot. On the pass the passer calls ‘ready’ which tells the shooter to bring the ball as quickly as possible to the ‘ready position’.

The passer, however, determines when the shooter will initiate the shot, by calling ‘shoot’. The passer will attempt to disturb the shooters normal rhythm by changing the amount of time between the calls ‘ready’ and ‘shoot’. This should vary from between fractions of a second, (for example, ‘ready..shoot’, to the extreme ‘ready………………shoot’.

One player shoots ten shots, and then exchanges positions with the passer-‘caller’. Make it fun for your players by having them play to a certain number of baskets.

Variations

  • I always teach my players to pass directly to the ‘ready-shoot’ position to increase that players, and my teams shooting percentage.
  • A variation of this drill is called ‘Bad pass Ready-Shoot’ where the passer-‘caller’ intentionally passed the ball low and away, or high and to the non-shooting hand. This should only be practiced with players who have already developed very solid shooting mechanics, but for the more experienced players is an excellent drill.

Tips

  • It is critical that your players have developed the basic shooting technique before proceeding to drills that change their rhythms, and can possibly create more variation in their shooting technique than in refining it into one consistent technique. If you players have problems shooting from a variety of positions, back up and have them shoot from one position, or even better closer to the basket until they have mastered the basic shooting skills. Shooting is always three C’s, consistency, concentration, and confidence. Without consistency their can be little confidence.
