This drill is a regular 5 on 5 scrimmage. The difference is that a second smaller ball is used. In addition each player must have their own basketball, and maintain their dribble constantly during the scrimmage. No player can participate in the action of the scrimmage without their ball and dribble.
The game of 5 on 5 can be played to 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 baskets.

Use the half court. Have three offensive players and three defensive players. Let them play normal 3-on-3, but at first, with passive defense. they are going to execute the 4 options in cutting off a screen: POPspan class=“caps”>OUT, CURL, FADE, BACKDOOR. They are going to execute CURL if the defender of the screen trails the cutter; if the defender overplay or get out the screen in advance the cutter should go BACKDOOR; if the defender slide through the screen, the cutter will POPOUT; if the defender squeeze, the cutter should FADE in which he puts his hand on the screeners hip to signal fade.

This drill goes way back to my days at the city pool in Ellwood City Pa. We used to play a game off the low board called jump-dive.
Someone would stand at the side of the pool and as you made your spring they would yell either jump or dive. You then tried to do as was yelled. I have applied this drill to our shooting practice.
A coach or other player positions themselves under the basket and pass a ball out to another player. The shooter steps in to receive the pass in order to set for a jump shot. But as the head and shoulders go up the passer yells either shot or drive. The player with the ball has to carry out orders. The kids love it and the ability of our kids to use the head and shoulder fake has greatly increased.

This is a great drill that simulates pressure situations and late game situations when your team must pass and move without the ball effectively. Also a great way to simulate those must steal situations for your defense. It is amazing to watch your team learn to work together and communicate as the drill progresses.

This drill teaches a player to set the ball quickly to their ‘READY’ shooting position (the last point the ball is set prior to initiating the shooting motion), and to maintain a constant rhythm and motion even if the shooting rhythm is disturbed by a defender, or momentary pause to spot an open player.

Helps players move without the ball and catching and shooting. It’s a basic pass and catch drill. Passes should be crisp just like a game pass. Shooting around the perimeter or as post shots depending on the player’s abilities.

This drill helped my team gain confidence in their ability to break a full court press.
It teaches the players to pass through a zone press, how to pivot away from pressure,
not to lose their composure.

This is a drill that helps the posts shoot under pressure. The shooting inside the paint is the skill that is being worked on. Most teams carry at least 4 post players but if you have more, place the extras around the three point line for passing.

This is an excellent drill for teach players to play with their backs to the basket while, at the same time, working on offensive and defensive rebounding. This is a very intense drill that will really work your players. This is also a good drill for making players physical and getting them use to contact.

This is a drill which, forces players to avoid the temptation to put the ball on the floor against a press defense. By not being allowed to put the ball on the floor, players are forced to catch the ball and look for a receiver that is open rather than dribble.

Posting up has changed in the NBA and college game over the last five or so years. Instead of posting up on the blocks, we post up in the middle, two/three feet below the foul line. We feel the offense gains an advantage by having more options open to him.

3 players stand under each basket on the court. A third group of three stands at half court with the player at mid court holding the basketball with the other players at each wing. At the whistle, the three players at half court proceed to either end to compete in a 3 on 3. Teams are to have only one shot at a basket. When a basket is made the offensive teams receives one point. Games can be played up to a predetermined amount or can be played for a predetermined amount of time.
