Speed change drill

Make four equal lines: Line one playing defense from baseline to half, line two playing defense from half to the basket. Repeat this on both sides of the court. Now get yourself some dribblers and let them try to score. The first defender can either keep defending or drop out at the half line.

Variations

The first defender can either make it a one on two by staying and defending all the way to the bucket or he/she can drop off at half and make it a one on one situation.

Tips

Emphasize good ballhandling — protect the ball, change speeds, keep head up, not to force it. Defensively teach not to reach, move your feet, and under the goal go straight up.

Skills

Offensively this drill teaches a ballhandler to take care of the ball, change speeds, and get a good shot at the basket.

Defensively this drill teaches you to defend a ballhandler, learn how to stop a player in the open court, and it teaches to defend well under the hoop.
