Close Out/ Square Up

A drill that develops the use of superior movement and footwork both on offense and defense. Used primarily as a defensive drill.

Instructions

3 Groups- 1 group on the 45, 1 group on the three point line at the point position and 1 group at the baseline on the split line.

  • Player on the baseline passes to player at the top of the three point line then performs a close out(Short and low)
*Meanwhile player on the 45 performs a V- Cut

  • Player at point passes to 45
  • Defender must close out again then contain the offensive player

Variations

  • Close out and containment footwork can be performed with defenders hands behind back.
  • Can start with pass to 45 first and alternatively point player can V- Cut
  • Make V- Cut player shoot and defender can perform a box out.
*If teaching offence encourage the use of patended individual offensive moves.

Tips

Be pendantic when teaching defensive footwork skills. ie closing out
