Dribble out of the Trap

Teaches players how to dribble out of a trap if they have no other options: also puts emphasis on not looking at the ball while dribbling.

Instructions

Each player in front of their line has a ball. Coach specifies which hand to dribble with. On coaches command (GO) each player speed dribbles to half court with hand coach selected. At half court, on coaches command (POUND) each player pounds the ball low with off arm out to keep the defense away. Enforce keeping head up. On coaches command (RETREAT), the players retreat while keeping their dribble and keeping their head up as the see the trap (or defense). On coaches command (CROSS), the players cross the ball to the other hand and explode to the other baseline.

Variations

Every once and a while, while the players are at half court pounding the ball, the coach can simulate defense. Try to get to ball and knock it away from the player.

Skills

Keeping your head up while dribbling; ability to retreat while maintaining your dribble; ability to change direction of dribble and explode by defender.

Players

No more than 7 at a time.
